We heard that the company had a shop on "Rakuten" Internet shopping mall before, but they have retreated therefrom now.
ではなく、
Our understanding is that in the past the company operated a shop on the "Rakuten" Internet shopping mall, but that subsequently the company withdrew its business.
と訳すのが良く、くだけた感じにするなら、
Our understanding is that in the past the company operated a shop on the "Rakuten" Internet shopping mall, but that subsequently the company pulled out.
とするのが良いでしょう。
同じような報告書における「権利者のX社では、数年前に健康関連産業へ進出を計画。それに伴って商標の取得を行ったが、認可手続きの煩雑さや問題の多さから事業化を断念した経緯があるとのことである。」という一文を英訳するなら、
We heard that a trademark right holder, X-company has the developments: the company planned to advance into a health-related industry a few years ago, and simultaneously obtained trademarks, however gave up commercializing that due to its cumbersome permission procedures and many problems.
ではなく、
Our understanding is that a trademark right holder, X-company, was planning to advance into the health-related industry a few years ago, and accordingly secured trademarks, but that because of procedural complications and a host of other problems the company decided not to embark on manufacturing on a commercial basis.
が適切です。一次翻訳は、文法的にも構文的にも誤りがありますが、特に問題となるのは「We heard that …」という表現です。報告書は、クライアントが料金を支払って依頼しているのですから、「We heard that …」という表現では、依頼を受けた会社が単なる噂を伝達しているに過ぎないというマイナスの印象を与えてしまいます。クライアントが求めているのは、慎重に検討された結論を含む報告書ですから、「Our understanding is that …」という表現の方が好ましいでしょう。その他の表現としては、
As a result of our investigations, we have come to the conclusion that …
As a result of our investigations, we have reached the conclusion that …
After completing our investigations, our considered view is that …
などが挙げられます。 |
