susceptible to
「Xは特に光や熱に弱い感熱紙を用紙として採用する場合に有用であった。」という一文に対する適訳は、
X has proved effective in terms of handling, as paper sheets for the printer unit, heat sensitive sheets that are susceptible to light or heat.
です。この例文の場合、「光や熱に弱い」という表現は、「weak to heat or light」ではなく、「susceptible to light or heat」が最も正確です。
「ニキビや肌荒れを起こしやすい肌を健やかに保ち、きめ細かく滑らかに整えるパック」という一節を英訳するなら、
pack designed to keep skin susceptible to pimples and roughness healthy and give it a silky smoothness
ではなく、
pack designed to keep in a healthy condition skin that is susceptible to pimples and roughness, and to give the skin a silky smoothness
です。最初の訳文は、筆者の意図とは正反対の意味に解釈されかねません。この一節は、自身の訳文の語順に細心の注意を払うとともに、訳文に不明瞭あるいは不自然なところがないか詳細にチェックして、丁寧に見直す必要があることを示す好例です。
peculiar to
「トヨタグループ企業特有の好適な配置でした。」という一文を英訳するなら、
These were favorable arrangements (that were) peculiar to companies in the Toyota Group.
が良いでしょう。
common to
「X、Y、Zに共通の活動」に相当する英語表現は、
activities (that are) common to X, Y and Z
です。
unique in
「これは新たに開発された世界でも比類のない技術です。」という一文なら、
This is technology that has been newly developed and that is unique in the world.
または
This is a newly developed technology (that is) unique in terms of the world.
と訳すのが適切です。
representative of
「(麺は、)四季折々の味覚と非常に相性がよい代表的な日本食です。」という一文を英訳するなら、
(Noodles) perfectly match foods of each season and are cuisines representing Japan.
よりも、
(Noodles) are ideal for performing roles expected of them as foods that are appropriate for each season of the year, and they are also regarded as cuisines that are truly representative of Japan.
の方が適切です。 |
