| 302. 前置詞: 正確に詳述する必要性 ― 「in terms of」、「in the form of」 |

「A、BおよびCはすべて電気強度で表れている。」という一文を英訳するなら、「specified with …」という表現を使うのではなく、
A, B and C are expressed (あるいは「specified」) in terms of electric-field intensity.
が適切です。「in terms of」は、一般的かつ便利でありながら、日本人翻訳者がなかなか正しく使いこなせない英語表現です。
「変更が可能であれば、再びユーロでの通知を送ってください。」という一文を英訳するなら、
If you could allow the change of payment method, please send a new notification of payment by Euro.
よりも、
If a change in the method of payment is possible, please send a new notification of payment expressed in terms of Euro.
の方がはるかに正確です。
「この発明は『物の発明』として明確ではない。」という一文なら、
These inventions are not clear as a ‘product invention.’
よりも、
These inventions are not clear in terms of ‘material inventions.’
の方が適訳です。
「in terms of」の別例として、「出願内容が著しく不明確であるから」という一節を英訳するなら、
since this application is seriously unclear in its application content
よりも、
since this application is conspicuously ambiguous in terms of its content
の方が適切です。
「Xは特に光や熱に弱い感熱紙を用紙として採用する場合に有用であった。」という一文なら、
X has proved effective in terms of handling, as paper sheets for the printer unit, heat sensitive sheets that are susceptible to light or heat.
と訳すのが適切です。
「これは新たに開発された世界でも比類のない技術です。」という一文なら、
This is a technology that has been newly developed and that is unique in the world.
または
This is a newly developed technology (that is) unique in terms of the world.
と訳すのが適切です。
スピーチにおける「『環境にやさしい』に役に立つ技術と商品で世界に発信する。」という一文を英訳するなら、
My intention is that we produce and export to global markets products and technologies that are beneficial in terms of being environment-friendly.
です。
そして最後に、「訪問聞き取り調査」に相当する英語表現は、
research in the form of visits and hearings
