よりも、

と訳す方が正確かつ適切です。最初の訳文は、「at a high precision」など、文法的な間違いがかなりあり、whereby節に特に欠陥があります。この一文は、英語では二文に分けるのが好適な長い和文の好例です。
「Cの粘りはDの粘りより高くなっている」という一節なら、
the viscosity of C is higher than the viscosity of D
ではなく、
the degree of viscosity of C is higher than that of D
が適訳です。
「このために、Bよりも大きな力をAに加えなければなりません。」という一文を英訳するなら、
Because of this structure it is required to apply larger force to A than the force applied to B.
よりも、
This structure necessitates applying to A a degree of force that is greater than the force applied to B.
の方が適切です。
「Xの硬さはYの硬さより硬い」という一節なら、
the hardness of X is higher than the hardness of Y
ではなく、
the degree of hardness of X is higher than that of Y
が適訳です。この種の表現を訳す場合には、英語では何が比較されているのか慎重に検討することが重要です。(訳者註: 個人的には、X is harder than Y. とか、X is higher in hardeness than Y. で十分に表せるような気がしますが...)
「多少の差はあれ」に相当する英語表現としては、
larger or smaller
ではなく、
differences to a greater or smaller degree
が適切です。 |
