このセクションで紹介するような短い表現を翻訳するにあたっては、時に慎重な扱いが求められます。それぞれが意味するところを伝える明瞭かつ自然な表現が日英両言語にあり、直訳は不適切な場合が多いということを翻訳者は心得ておく必要があります。
「と言われているため」に相当する英語表現は、「as is general said」よりも、「as is generally accepted」の方がはるかに好ましいでしょう。
「目的をもって前進」に相当する英語表現は、「moving forward with purpose」です。
「ホテルに戻って解散といたします」という一節を英訳するなら、
after …, we shall be returning to the hotel, and we will thus come to the end of our official program
が適切です。
「自分がどの位置にあるか知る必要があります」という一節を英訳するなら、
it is necessary for you all to appreciate where you stand within the overall scheme of thing
と意訳するのが良いでしょう。
「足場が悪いところがあります」この一節は、直訳が不適切であることを示す一例です。適切と言える翻訳案を挙げるなら、
there are areas where it is not always easy to secure a foothold
といったところでしょう。
「その重責に身が引き締まる。」という一文を英訳するなら、
We are acutely conscious of the heavy responsibility that we will be assuming.
と意訳するのが適切です。
「新興市場の急成長と先進国の頭打ち」に相当する英語表現は、
the rapid growth in new markets and the top cut of demands of advanced countries
よりも、
the rapid growth in new markets and saturation levels being reached in demand in advanced countries
の方が妥当性は上です。 |
