Hundreds honour heroes Four soldiers, journalist repatriated in emotional ceremony at CFB Trenton TORONT SUN 4th January 2010, 3:05pm
CFB TRENTON ? In a touching show of patriotism and support for Canada's troops, hundreds braved the bone-numbing cold to line the tarmac in Trenton.
Later, they lined the street outside the coroner's office in Toronto and bridges in between as the bodies of four soldiers and the country's first journalist to die in Afghanistan returned home yesterday.
At CFB Trenton alone, a crowd of about 400 ? many weeping openly -- converged along the fence in the area south of the base known as Repatriation Row to honour the five souls killed Wednesday by a roadside bomb near Kandahar.
The throng watched with aching hearts as family members huddled together on the tarmac awaiting the flag-draped caskets of their fallen loved ones to be transferred from the aircraft to hearses.
The hearses and black limousines formed a lengthy motorcade that rolled down the Highway of Heroes under police escort to Toronto, where autopsies will be performed.
Rick Foreman was among those who came to pay their respects to Calgary Herald reporter Michelle Lang, 34, and the four soldiers killed with her.
Gazing through the fence, he spotted the caskets carrying Sgt. George Miok, 28, and Cpl. Zachery McCormack, 21, both of Edmonton; Sgt. Kirk Taylor, 28, of Yarmouth N.S.; and Pte. Garrett Chidley, 21, of Cambridge. ¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦¡¦
